When we speak about police accountability, our platform includes the following:
- Giving full investigative abilities and real power to an elected Civilian Review Board in order to address police brutality and hold officers accountable.
- Demilitarizing the NYPD and ending police surveillance of our neighborhoods.
- Defunding the NYPD. Divert funds from NYPD and Department of Corrections and reinvest that money into our communities thereby preventing crime by addressing “root-cause” issues such as poverty and mental health. Invest instead in education, youth services, housing, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, healthcare access and establishing new approaches to conflict resolution.
- Calling for a substantial increase in funding to the New York City Commission on Human Rights so that more New Yorkers can be afforded effective legal recourse against discrimination in employment, housing and law enforcement.
Here are some legislative advancements we have put forward to fulfill our platform:
Cosponsored 0549 Bans solitary confinement in city jails Introduction
Cosponsored 0463 Creates an elected civilian review board, repealing the current civilian complaint review board
Cosponsored 0215 Expands social services to those who have been released from prison after a wrongful conviction
