KRJ Sanitation Plan

  • Return to Harlem the 223 litter baskets taken away by the New York Sanitation Department and increase the number of litter baskets and recycling litter baskets in District 9.
  • Fight Harlem’s trash and sanitation problem by restoring the sanitation budget and increasing trash pick-up.
  • Implement plentiful access to trash, composting, and recycling bins.
  • Prioritize bike lane maintenance and clearing, especially during snow falls to allow workers who are cyclists equal access transportation.
  • Implement Zero Waste Policies for commercial businesses, small businesses, and residents through:
    • Implementing a Commercial Waste Zone so that the larger producers of waste can divert and reduce waste.
    • Holding industry responsible for the full life cycle of products produced, sold and used in NYC, and adopt programs that help NYC businesses use locally recovered resources.
    • Planning for a Zero Waste Future by phasing out waste export and incineration contracts and phasing in reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and anaerobic digestion contracts.
    • Building a Zero Waste Environment by educating and implementing policies and laws around waste storage and collection for architects, developers, building  managers, and city planners to reduce associated vehicle emissions and costs of collection.
    • Extending Recycling to more than 600,000 residents who live in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) buildings.
    • Reducing single-use consumer products through environmental studies in other municipalities and strategic recommendations to pass laws and create incentives fitting for the district and beyond.
    • Providing education and financial incentives for households and consumers to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. This can be achieved through municipal funding.
    • Increasing Organics Diversion through source separation of food scraps and yard trimmings made mandatory for businesses and through incentives for residents. Organic material accounts for 41 percent of all waste we send to landfill and incineration!
    • Waste prevention and reuse are the most preferable methods of zero waste because they reduce environmental and greenhouse impacts the most and can create the most local jobs
